To help alleviate AirPlay problems, try the following:

  • Quit apps that you don't need open.
    • To Quit an app on an iPad - Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to the App Switcher window. Find the app you want to quit and swipe up on its app window.
    • To Quit an app on a Mac - Click on the app's name in the menu bar and choose the Quit command.
  • Quit Chrome, unless you absolutely need it open. If you must use Chrome, limit the number of open browser tabs.
  • Restart the device.
    • On a MacBook - The Restart command is found under the Apple icon at the top-left of the screen.
    • On an iPad - Open the Settings app, tap General from the left side, and tap Shut Down at the bottom of the right side. After the screen turns off, hold down the top button until the Apple logo appears.
  • If you're playing a video:
    • iPad
      • YouTube video - Try using the YouTube app. The YouTube app is available for installation in the Self-Service section of the Mosyle School (Manager) app.
      • Non-YouTube video - Try AirPlay's handoff mode. Handoff is the AirPlay icon within the video's window. If available, it will appear when you hover the pointer over the video.
    • Mac
      • Try AirPlay's handoff mode. Open the video in the Safari web browser. If handoff mode is available for the video, an AirPlay icon will appear within the video's window when you hover the pointer over the video (see the picture above).
    • Downsides of using the YouTube app and AirPlay's handoff mode:
      • Closed captions will not display
      • The volume can not be adjusted from the iPad/Mac. The volume would need to be adjusted at the projector and/or speakers.
      • When used on an iPad, the AirPlay session may quit if you try to use another app while AirPlaying.
  • Purchased movie won't AirPlay
  • Restart the Apple TV
    • The Apple TV is what does the AirPlay. It is a small black box and will be near the projector.
      • If the projector is ceiling-mounted, the Apple TV will likely be sitting on top of the projector.
      • If the projector is wall-mounted, the Apple TV will likely be attached to a ceiling tile.
    • To restart the Apple TV:
      • Option 1 - Have a member of Westside's tech team send a restart command to your Apple TV.
      • Option 2 - If you have an Apple FrontRow remote (white plastic) or one of 1st-3rd gen Apple TV remotes (all aluminum), see the instructions on the page linked below.
      • Option 3 - Cycle the power to the Apple TV by unplugging its power cord for a few seconds and then plug it back in. You may want to ask tech support or building services to do this for you if your Apple TV requires a ladder or step stool to reach it.
  • No Audio
    • Make sure the volume is turned up and not muted.
      • Places to check the volume:
        • Volume control on your device (F12 key on MacBook Airs).
        • Volume control on the video window (for example, YouTube videos have a volume control near the lower-left when you hover over them).
        • Volume control on the projector.
          • If the projector is wall-mounted, use the volume knob on the Extron wall switch.
          • If the projector is ceiling-mounted, use the projector's remote. If the projector has external speakers plugged into it, also check that the speakers are turned on and adjust the volume on them.
    • Restart the Apple TV.
  • AirPlay icon missing from Mac's menu bar
  • If all these AirPlay solutions fail you:
    • If available, use a HDMI or VGA cable to connect your device to the projector. This will likely require an adapter.
